Smart home protocols: which one should you choose?
Zigbee, Wi-Fi, Matter, Thread, KNX… The names are many, but the choice is actually simple — once you know three questions: how many devices you plan, whether you can run wires, and how much you care about working without the internet. This guide answers all three.
Choosing a protocol in four steps
Count your devices
Up to ~5 devices anything works, even Wi-Fi. From 10 and up you want Zigbee or another mesh technology, or your router and apps will drown.
Wires or wireless?
A renovation or new build lets you run wires — then KNX or DALI will serve for decades. In a finished home, wireless Zigbee/Wi-Fi is the only sensible path.
Local or cloud?
Want the lights to work with the internet down — pick Zigbee with a local hub or Home Assistant. Pure cloud devices are cheaper but depend on the vendor.
Check your ecosystem
Apple, Google or Alexa? Matter-certified devices work in all three — if you mix ecosystems, look for the Matter logo.
Seven protocols — the short version
Each has its role
There is no single “best” protocol — there is the right one per job: Zigbee for sensors, Wi-Fi to start cheap, Matter for the future, KNX for a full renovation.
Zigbee — the workhorse
Mesh network, batteries lasting years, hundreds of compatible devices. Needs a hub, but everything runs locally.
Wi-Fi — the cheap start
No hub, device in the app within a minute. Downsides: loads your router and often depends on the cloud.
Matter + Thread — the future
One standard backed by Apple, Google and Amazon. Thread brings mesh speed, Matter brings compatibility.
Bluetooth — a niche role
Fine for locks and nearby sensors; at house scale it usually needs a gateway.
KNX and DALI — the wired class
For renovations and new builds: maximum reliability, but you need an electrician and a design. Covered in depth on our sister site SmartMāja.

Which smart home protocol is the best?
There is no universal best. For sensors and whole-home coverage Zigbee usually wins, Wi-Fi for a cheap start, Matter for bridging ecosystems, and wired KNX for full renovations. It depends on device count, renovation options and how much you value local control.
Can I mix several protocols in one home?
Yes — almost everyone does: Zigbee sensors, a few Wi-Fi devices and new Matter-certified gear live together fine. A hub or Home Assistant gives you one app for all of them.
What is Matter and will it replace the rest?
Matter is a compatibility standard, not a new radio: it runs over Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Thread. It doesn't replace Zigbee or KNX — it lets devices from different vendors work in every major ecosystem at once.
Zigbee or Z-Wave?
Both are solid mesh protocols, but in Latvia — and in our shop — the device choice is far wider on the Zigbee side. That's why we recommend Zigbee: more devices, lower prices, easier to find help.
Can I install KNX myself?
KNX is a wired system that needs a design, an electrician and ETS configuration — it is not the DIY-friendliest. What you still can do yourself, and where the specialist work begins, we cover honestly in a separate guide.
