Safe installation: Fixed lighting and LED power
⚠️ Important
- 230 V is hazardous. Have a qualified electrician carry out fixed wiring, wiring alterations and distribution board work.
- Switching off through an app or wall switch does not ensure safe isolation. Do not open housings or touch terminals.
- Never connect 230 V to an LED strip or low-voltage controller input. An LED driver's output is not necessarily safe to touch either.
What to know before buying
Check that the required neutral conductor N is available, with protective earth PE for Class I equipment. Class II equipment must be connected according to its markings. Check luminaire weight, mounting surface, installation space and maintenance access to the power supply. In damp locations and outdoors, select an appropriate IP rating; connections also need protection.
For LED strips, match the rated voltage, such as 12 or 24 V, and total wattage W. A constant-current LED module needs a driver with matching current in mA and an appropriate output voltage range. Controller loads must remain within both per-channel and total limits in A. Follow the manufacturer's requirements for power margin and temperature derating. Match the dimming method: phase-cut, PWM, DALI and 0–10 V are not interchangeable. The electrician assesses inrush current, circuit breaker suitability and residual-current protection (RCD).
What the electrician does
- Isolates the circuit, prevents accidental reconnection and verifies absence of voltage with a suitable tester.
- Checks wiring, protective devices, conductors and compatibility between the equipment.
- Secures the luminaire to a suitable surface; wires must not support its weight.
- Positions the power supply with the required ventilation, keeping it clear of thermal insulation unless permitted.
- Connects according to the manufacturer's diagram, observing polarity, conductor size, terminal requirements and necessary circuit separation.
- Secures cables, encloses connections, closes housings, performs checks and tests operation, including dimming.
What you can do yourself
After the electrician's checks, add the device to its app and prepare the supported Wi-Fi network or required gateway. Set names, schedules and scenes. Check switching, brightness and behaviour after losing the network connection. Enter pairing mode using only manufacturer-provided controls accessible to users. Do not alter wiring or the driver's electrical settings.
Common mistakes
- Connecting a 12 V strip to a 24 V supply.
- Using a constant-voltage supply for a constant-current LED module.
- Connecting a non-dimmable driver to a wall dimmer.
- Covering the supply with insulation or enclosing it without ventilation.
- Overloading a controller channel or using undersized wires for a long LED strip.
When to disconnect power immediately
If there is a burning smell, smoke, sparks, melting, an electric shock sensation when touched, or water entering connections, safely isolate the affected circuit at the distribution board. If the breaker or RCD trips repeatedly, do not reset it again; resume use only after an electrician's inspection.
