Safe installation: Safety with 230 V devices

⚠️ Important

  • 230 V is dangerous. Do not touch exposed wires or terminals. Switching a device off through an app or button does not mean it is disconnected from the mains.
  • Have a qualified electrician perform fixed wiring, wiring alterations and distribution board work. A device with a factory-fitted plug may be connected to a suitable, undamaged socket according to its instructions.
  • Do not use damaged devices, cables or sockets. Protect devices from children and moisture unless designed for those conditions. Do not open housings or modify protective components.

What to know before buying

Check the supply voltage and frequency, maximum current in amperes and power in watts. Load type matters: permitted ratings for heaters, LED power supplies and motors may differ; starting current can exceed operating current. A stated power rating does not apply universally to every load.

For built-in devices, check whether a neutral conductor N, sufficient mounting box depth or distribution board space is required. Never substitute protective earth PE for N. An electrician assesses conductor size, earthing, the circuit breaker and required residual current protection (RCD). Choose moisture protection, temperature limits and ventilation suitable for the location. Read the Latvian instructions available on the product page before buying.

What the electrician does

  1. Isolates the circuit, prevents accidental reconnection and verifies absence of voltage using a suitable, checked instrument.
  2. Assesses existing wiring, identifies conductors and checks that protection is suitable.
  3. Checks device ratings against the load, starting current and installation conditions.
  4. Connects conductors according to the manufacturer's diagram, observing terminal requirements and specified tightening torque.
  5. Secures the device, provides ventilation and cable strain relief, closes housings and checks connections.
  6. Performs necessary safety measurements, restores power and tests operation, including behaviour after power or network connection loss.

What you can do yourself

After safe installation, configure the app, compatible network, access permissions and routines. Test manual control and select a safe state after power restoration. Use remote switching only where the connected equipment permits it. Keep the instructions; inspect externally without opening the housing.

Common mistakes

  • Treating an app command as safe electrical isolation.
  • Using PE instead of N or leaving required earthing disconnected.
  • Exceeding the total permitted device or extension lead load.
  • Ignoring motor and LED power supply starting currents.
  • Forcing a device into a shallow box or covering ventilation openings.

When to disconnect power immediately

If you notice smoke, burning smells, sparks, unusual overheating, an electric shock, water ingress or repeated protection trips, safely disconnect the circuit. Do not touch the damaged device or reconnect it before an electrician checks it. Call 112 for a fire or injured person; never use water on energised electrical equipment.
