Safe installation: Thermostats and electric heating

⚠️ Important

  • 230 V is dangerous. A qualified electrician must carry out fixed electrical connections, wiring changes and distribution board work.
  • Switching off through an app or thermostat screen does not isolate the mains supply. Safe circuit isolation is necessary before installation.
  • Never cover radiators; maintain specified clearances from furniture and curtains. For underfloor heating, observe the flooring manufacturer's temperature limits.

What to know before buying

Check whether the thermostat supports electric or water underfloor heating: outputs and load ratings may differ. Check supply voltage, neutral wire N requirements, mounting box depth, total heater power in W and current in A. The thermostat relay must suit the load; higher power may require a contactor and distribution board space.

Check the existing floor sensor's type and resistance versus temperature characteristics, not just its wire count. A radiator control input is not necessarily intended for a 230 V supply. An electrician assesses cables, circuit breaker, RCD protection and permitted bathroom positioning. General guidance: [LBN 261-15 «Ēku iekšējā elektroinstalācija»](https://likumi.lv/ta/id/274674).

What the electrician does

  1. Isolates the relevant circuit, prevents accidental reconnection and verifies absence of voltage with a suitable tester.
  2. Checks wiring, protective devices, load and protective conductor connection where required by the appliance design.
  3. Positions the thermostat away from sunlight, draughts and radiator heat; installs the floor sensor in a conduit allowing replacement, between heating cable runs.
  4. Checks and records heating cable resistance and insulation resistance before and after laying; does not shorten factory fixed length resistance heating cable.
  5. Connects devices using the manufacturer's diagram, distinguishing supply, sensor and control connections; checks fixings and radiator clearances.
  6. Tests protection and temperature control, sets the floor temperature limit. Starts heating only after the screed or adhesive manufacturer's specified curing period.

What you can do yourself

After the electrician's checks, connect the device to its app and supported network, set schedules and scenes. Compare temperature readings with room conditions, check responses to settings and operation without internet. Keep within the configured safety limits and leave the wiring compartment closed.

Common mistakes

  • Connecting multiple heaters beyond the thermostat relay's load rating.
  • Using an incompatible sensor or disabling the floor temperature limit.
  • Shortening, crossing or overlapping heating cable.
  • Switching on before screed or adhesive has cured.
  • Covering a radiator or using an extension lead unsuitable for its load.

When to disconnect power immediately

If you notice burning smells, smoke, sparks, overheating connections, an electric shock or repeated protective device trips, safely isolate the relevant circuit at the distribution board. Do not touch the damaged device or reconnect it until an electrician has checked it.
