Safe installation: Blind and curtain motors
⚠️ Important
- 230 V is hazardous. Have a qualified electrician perform fixed electrical connections, wiring changes and control module installation.
- Never energise both motor directions simultaneously. Controls must provide interlocking and the manufacturer's specified delay before reversing direction.
- Keep hands, children and pets away during movement. Disconnect power before cleaning or releasing trapped fabric; an app command does not replace electrical isolation.
What to know before buying
Identify the motor's control interface: separate 230 V direction wires, volt-free contacts or integrated electronic controls. These arrangements are not automatically interchangeable. An ordinary lighting dimmer is unsuitable. Check motor torque, curtain weight, compatibility with the tube or track, and available end-position adjustments.
Control modules often require a neutral conductor N, which may be absent at the existing switch. Allow sufficient space in a deep mounting box or distribution board, access to connections and suitable moisture conditions. Compare motor current, power and starting current with the controller's permitted motor load; a lighting wattage rating alone is insufficient. The electrician assesses protective earth PE requirements, the circuit breaker and residual-current protection (RCD).
What the electrician does
- Isolates the relevant circuit, prevents accidental reconnection and verifies absence of voltage using a suitable tester.
- Checks wiring, protection, installation location and compatibility of the motor, switch and module.
- Checks mechanical fixings, unobstructed movement and cable routing, protecting the cable from crushing and moving parts.
- Connects equipment according to the manufacturer's diagram, provides required earthing and direction interlocking, and safely encloses connections.
- Checks travel directions during a controlled test, sets end positions and then calibrates the controller, where supported.
- Checks stopping, the local switch, behaviour after power restoration and any provided obstacle protection; explains safe operation.
What you can do yourself
After installation, add the device to its app and a compatible network, then set names, schedules and scenes. Watch the first movements in person and keep the travel area clear. Check opening, closing and stopping commands. Enable automation after successful testing. Observe the motor's operating and cooling periods; do not open electrical wiring boxes.
Common mistakes
- Using two independent relays without direction interlocking.
- Connecting several motors in parallel to one output without manufacturer approval.
- Starting calibration before setting end positions.
- Selecting controls solely by their lighting load rating.
- Assuming every motor detects obstacles and prevents trapping.
When to disconnect power immediately
Disconnect the circuit if there is a burning smell, smoke, sparking, unusual overheating, a damaged cable, moisture in connections, or a motor that hums without moving. Do the same if the mechanism travels beyond an end position or protection trips repeatedly. Do not use the equipment until a specialist has checked it.
