Smart devices talk over different wireless standards. You don't need to be an engineer to choose the right one — here's a short guide to which to pick when. Every smarteg device is built on one of these four.

Wi-Fi

The same network tech that's already in your home. Wi-Fi devices connect straight to your router — no extra hub required. Perfect when you want to start with one or two devices, like a smart plug or camera. Downside: many Wi-Fi devices can crowd your network.

Zigbee

The most popular standard for sensors and bulbs. Zigbee devices build their own mesh network — each device relays the signal to the next, so coverage stays solid across the whole home. It uses very little power, so battery sensors last for years. A small Zigbee hub is needed.

Matter

The new common standard backed by Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung. A Matter device works with any of these ecosystems — buy without worrying about compatibility. If you're thinking long term, look for Matter support.

Thread

A low-power mesh network that many Matter devices run on. Similar to Zigbee, but built into the Matter world. It needs a Thread border router (often already inside a smart speaker or hub).

Which to choose

  • Starting small, no hub — go Wi-Fi
  • Lots of sensors and bulbs — go Zigbee
  • Want Apple/Google/Amazon compatibility — look for Matter
  • Building for the future around Matter — Thread devices
