Safe installation: Switches, sockets and dimmers
⚠️ Important
- 230 V is dangerous. Have a qualified electrician perform fixed electrical connections, replacement and wiring checks.
- Switching off using a button or app does not isolate the device from the mains. Do not open the mechanism or touch terminals.
- Use only manufacturer-approved loads and environments. Do not leave a socket’s protective earth contact disconnected where a protective conductor is required.
What to know before buying
Check whether the mounting box contains a neutral conductor N: many smart switches need one. Never use protective earth PE instead of N. Devices without N may require a minimum load and a manufacturer-specified bypass module at the light fitting.
Check box depth, fixings and wiring space. Compare rated current in amperes, power in watts and load type: LED limits may be lower than incandescent limits. Dimmers need dimmable lamps, compatible drivers and a matching dimming method. Connect motors or heaters only where permitted. Installing several devices together may require reduced load limits. Check multi-location switching arrangements, wireless protocol and hub requirements. An electrician assesses wiring, circuit breakers and residual-current protection RCD, especially for sockets and wet areas.
What the electrician does
- Isolates the circuit, prevents accidental reconnection and verifies absence of voltage using a suitable voltage tester.
- Identifies conductors and checks their condition, cross-section and protection, without relying solely on insulation colour.
- Checks the box, intended load, availability of N and PE, and suitability of the wiring arrangement.
- Connects conductors according to the manufacturer’s diagram and terminal requirements; does not combine neutrals from different circuits.
- Secures the mechanism and fits its cover without trapping wires or leaving live parts accessible.
- After necessary checks, restores power and verifies protection and operation; sets a stable dimming range where applicable.
What you can do yourself
After installation, install the app, connect to the appropriate network or hub and create routines. For Wi-Fi devices, check the required frequency band. Test buttons, remote control and behaviour after power or network restoration. Adjust settings through the app without opening the mechanism.
Common mistakes
- Buying a device requiring N for a box without N.
- Dimming non-dimmable LED lamps or incompatible drivers.
- Applying incandescent power limits to LED loads.
- Forcing a mechanism into a shallow box and trapping wires.
- Using an ordinary switch diagram for multi-location control without checking compatibility.
When to disconnect power immediately
If you notice a burning smell, smoke, sparking, crackling, excessive heat, discolouration or repeated protective-device tripping, isolate the circuit at the distribution board if safe. Do not touch the damaged device or reconnect it before an electrician checks it.
