Safe installation: DIN modules in the switchboard

⚠️ Important

  • 230 V is hazardous. A qualified electrician must carry out fixed wiring connections and alterations inside the board.
  • A switched-off relay or app command does not provide safe isolation. Multiple supplies may be present, including a solar inverter or UPS.
  • Do not remove protective covers or touch terminals. An RCD does not replace earthing; an RCD without overcurrent protection does not replace a circuit breaker.

Before buying

Confirm module width, DIN rail type, board depth, wiring space and cooling with your electrician. Check supply voltage, phase count and neutral conductor requirements. Circuit breaker selection must consider conductor size, load and prospective short-circuit current; RCD/RCBO selection requires the correct type, rated current and residual-current trip threshold.

For relays and actuators, check per-channel and total device load limits in A/W, LED driver inrush current and motor loads. Check power supply output voltage, capacity and temperature limits. A KNX TP bus needs a suitable supply with a choke; an ordinary DC supply is not a direct substitute. Establish whether control requires a gateway, network or programming.

What the electrician does

  1. Disconnects all supplies to the relevant circuit, prevents accidental reconnection and verifies absence of voltage with a suitable tester.
  2. Assesses existing conductors, earthing, protective devices and the board’s suitability for the additional load.
  3. Secures modules to the DIN rail, observing manufacturer-specified orientation and ventilation clearances.
  4. Connects conductors and compatible comb busbars, following terminal torque and conductor ferrule requirements.
  5. Keeps N and PE correctly separated, avoids shared neutrals between different RCD-protected circuits and maintains separation between KNX bus and 230 V circuits.
  6. Labels circuits, fits protective covers, performs necessary measurements, checks protection and provides operating instructions.

What you can do yourself

After commissioning, configure the app, connect the supported network and create scenarios. Check control and behaviour after a power interruption. Have a specialist perform initial KNX configuration. Use the RCD/RCBO TEST button at the manufacturer’s specified intervals without removing covers; this does not replace electrical measurements.

Common mistakes

  • Increasing the breaker rating without checking conductor capacity.
  • Sharing neutrals between different RCD circuits or confusing N and PE.
  • Selecting LED or motor loads by watts alone, ignoring inrush current.
  • Using incompatible comb busbars or incorrect terminal torque.
  • Blocking power supply ventilation or connecting the KNX bus to an unsuitable supply output.

When to disconnect power immediately

If you notice burning smells, smoke, sparks, melting or water inside the board, disconnect power using a safely accessible main switch. Do not touch the damaged board. If protection trips repeatedly, leave power disconnected until an electrician checks it. In a fire, call 112.
