Safe installation: Smart relays in wall boxes
⚠️ Important
- 230 V is dangerous. A qualified electrician must carry out fixed wiring, wiring alterations and installation behind a wall switch.
- Switching off through an app or wall switch does not mean the box is de-energised. Before opening it, isolate the relevant circuit and verify that no voltage is present.
- Use the module only for its intended purpose and within the manufacturer's specified conditions. Keep the instructions and safety warnings in Latvian.
What to know before buying
Check whether the module needs a neutral conductor (N) and whether one is available in the switch box. Often, only a live conductor and a wire to the light are present. Never use the protective earth conductor (PE) instead of neutral. Modules without neutral may require a minimum load or a manufacturer-specified bypass module near the light.
Check box depth and space for the module, connections and wires without compression. Observe temperature limits; do not wrap the module in thermal insulation. Compare permitted current (A), power (W) and load type: LED drivers and motors can have starting currents much higher than their operating currents. A relay does not automatically provide dimming.
Check compatibility with the existing switch or push button, including control from multiple locations. Confirm whether supported-band Wi-Fi or a compatible Zigbee coordinator is required. The electrician assesses the circuit breaker and necessary residual-current protection (RCD); internal module protection does not replace these.
What the electrician does
- Isolates the relevant circuit, prevents accidental re-energisation and verifies absence of voltage with a suitable tester.
- Identifies conductors and circuits, checking their condition, conductor sizes and protective devices.
- Checks that the load, switch and box suit the selected module.
- Connects the module according to the manufacturer's diagram and terminal requirements; installs the specified bypass module if needed.
- Positions the module and connections securely without pinching wires, then secures the switch and cover.
- Restores power and checks local and remote control, behaviour after a power interruption and heating under the intended load.
What you can do yourself
After installation, add the device to the app and network, install updates and create automation routines. Choose a safe state after power restoration. Check wall-switch operation and behaviour without internet access. Do not alter electrical connections.
Common mistakes
- Discovering the required neutral is missing only during installation.
- Forcing the module into a shallow box and damaging wire insulation.
- Selecting LED or motor loads solely by rated watts.
- Ignoring minimum-load or bypass requirements for modules without neutral.
- Selecting an unsuitable switch-input mode or incompatible multi-location wiring arrangement.
When to disconnect power immediately
If you notice a burning smell, crackling, sparking or unusual cover heating, safely disconnect the circuit at the distribution board. Do the same if water enters the box or protection trips repeatedly. Do not open the box or restore power until an electrician has checked it.
