Safe installation: Gate and barrier automation
⚠️ Svarīgi
- 230 V is hazardous. A qualified electrician must make the fixed electrical connection; a competent automation installer must install the drive and configure safety functions.
- A moving gate or barrier arm can crush someone. Keep children away from its movement area and remote controls; do not touch hinges, gears or drive mechanisms.
- Read the manufacturer's instructions and warnings in Latvian before use. Even with a 24 V motor, the control enclosure may contain 230 V.
What to know before buying
Match the drive to the gate type, leaf weight and length or barrier arm length, usage frequency and wind load. Gates must move freely; a motor cannot replace mechanical repairs. Check the outdoor temperature range, enclosure protection against moisture and access to manual release.
Confirm power requirements, cable routing and distance to the distribution board. The electrician determines cable size, protective conductor, circuit breaker and RCD requirements and type. A smart relay must match the controller input: never apply 230 V to a volt-free contact input. Photocells and safety edges must be compatible with the controller.
What the electrician does
- Isolates power, prevents accidental reconnection and verifies absence of voltage, accounting for any backup battery.
- Checks mechanical condition, fixings, travel limits and trapping points with the automation installer.
- Provides suitable power and protection, protects cables against mechanical damage and seals cable entries.
- Connects power, required earthing and controls following the manufacturer's diagram, separating mains and low-voltage circuits.
- The automation installer fits and checks photocells, safety edges and end positions, then sets movement and force limitation.
- Checks electrical protection, safety responses and movement forces with suitable equipment; demonstrates stopping and manual release.
Photocells alone cannot address every trapping hazard; protection must cover the entire movement area. Safety guidance: [HSE](https://www.hse.gov.uk/work-equipment-machinery/powered-gates/safety.htm).
What you can do yourself
After commissioning, configure the app, a strong password, network and access permissions. Test routines while watching the gate with its movement area clear. Follow the instructions for safety checks; never use a person as an obstacle. Do not open electrical compartments or alter force settings.
Common mistakes
- An undersized drive or unsuitable duty cycle.
- Increasing force to overcome binding or ice.
- Bypassing photocells or leaving trapping points unprotected.
- Applying 230 V to a volt-free control input.
- Enabling automatic closing without tested safety devices.
When to disconnect power immediately
If there is smoke, a burning smell, sparking, damaged wiring, water inside the controller or unexpected movement, safely isolate power and prevent use. Do the same if safety devices fail. Stay clear of moving mechanisms; have a specialist restore operation after resolving the fault.
