Walk each room and write down scenarios

Go room by room and note what you want automated there — lighting, climate, security, blinds, maybe energy monitoring. Start from what you want, not from devices.

Weigh wired vs wireless for your specific home

In a new build or after a full renovation, a wired bus system (like KNX) is easier to consider, since cabling can go in during construction. In an existing home, wireless ecosystems (Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi) usually install without opening walls. A hybrid approach — wired backbone for core functions, wireless for flexible points — is often practical.

Plan topology and device roles

On paper, decide where the hub/controller sits, how the backbone (wired network or wireless mesh) reaches each zone, and what role each device plays — sensor, actuator, controller, gateway. Review this together with your electrician early.

Choose a controller and phase the project

Decide between an open controller (like Home Assistant), which takes more hands-on setup, or a simpler ready-made system. Break the project into phases — core safety and a couple of comfort scenarios first, full lighting/climate control later — and plan the actual scope and budget with an integrator or supplier.

Planning happens BEFORE you shop

A plan on paper is cheap to change. A plan you only discover after buying devices or closing up walls is expensive — or impossible — to fix.

Start from goals, not devices

Write down what the home should do day to day — lighting scenes, room- or schedule-based climate control, security, blinds, maybe energy management — before you look at any hardware.

Wired vs wireless — an honest tradeoff, not better/worse

Wired systems offer very high long-term reliability with no radio interference, but need conduits planned in advance. Wireless systems install with less disruption but depend on radio coverage, batteries, and sometimes a hub.

The ecosystem/controller choice is separate

Wired or wireless doesn't decide who controls it. An open, local-first controller (like Home Assistant) gives flexibility and can bridge multiple protocols, at the cost of more setup involvement. A single-vendor ecosystem (a KNX controller, Loxone Miniserver, a consumer hub) can be simpler to run, but ties you more closely to that vendor.

Coordinate with the electrical plan early

Spare conduits for low-voltage/bus cabling, and pulling a neutral wire to switch positions (many smart switches need it, even where a traditional switch doesn't), need to be agreed with your electrician BEFORE walls close — cheap now, expensive or impossible later.

Leave headroom, but don't invent the future

Spare conduits and a documented plan give you flexibility later. Matter/Thread is still maturing — it improves compatibility for some device classes, but doesn't yet replace a careful ecosystem choice. Actual prices and device counts always depend on your specific project.

No. Start with what the home should do — the rest (wired or wireless, which controller) follows from whether your home is new-build or existing, and how much you want to manage yourself.

Do I have to choose KNX if I'm building new?
