Understand universes and channels

One DMX512 universe carries 512 channels, each with a value 0-255. Every pixel or segment uses several channels (e.g. R/G/B), so plan your channel count before buying anything.

Plan your addressing

Every fixture or pixel group needs its own address within the universe so the controller knows which value goes where. This step needs a spreadsheet, not just plugging things in.

Wire it as a daisy-chain, with termination

DMX512 devices connect one after another (daisy-chain), never in a star topology, and the last device on the line needs a 120-ohm terminator to stop signal reflections. A single segment allows a maximum of 32 unit loads before you need a splitter.

Consider Art-Net once your setup grows

If you want to control from a computer or run several universes at once for a bigger install, DMX can also travel over Ethernet via Art-Net or sACN instead of a direct RS-485 cable.

Without a terminator, the signal reflects off the end of the line, and downstream fixtures can misbehave or stop responding altogether.

Max 32 unit loads per segment

A unit load is a standardised RS-485 receiver load, not literally a fixture count -- some fixtures draw more than one. Go past the limit and you need a splitter or repeater.

Art-Net or sACN over the network

Art-Net is widely adopted but is not an official ANSI/ESTA standard; sACN (ANSI E1.31) is the official standard and supports multicast. Both let you run multiple universes over Ethernet.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between running DMX over a wire and using Art-Net?

Plain DMX512 runs directly over an RS-485 cable in a daisy-chain with termination at the end -- simple and reliable for small installs. Art-Net (and sACN) carry DMX universes over an Ethernet/IP network instead, letting you control from a computer and run several universes at once for larger projects, but they need network infrastructure and a gateway between the network and the DMX line.

Will it still work if I skip planning the addressing?

Honestly -- not reliably. If fixtures don't have correctly set addresses or the line is missing its terminator, the install can flicker, lag, or partly stop responding. DMX512 isn't a plug-and-forget technology -- proper operation needs you to understand addressing and follow the termination and segment-load rules.

What is RDM and do I need it?

RDM (Remote Device Management, ANSI E1.20) runs on the same line as DMX512 and lets you auto-discover and address fixtures instead of manually setting DIP switches on each one. It's backward-compatible with plain DMX512 receivers, so you can mix it into a partial install.

Which connector do I need?

ANSI E1.11 specifies a 5-pin XLR connector, but in practice 3-pin XLR is very common on entertainment lighting gear -- it's not compliant with the standard, but it's widespread, and it's often what you'll actually run into.

Is DMX512 the right fit for ordinary house lighting?

DMX512 is built for dynamic, scenic lighting with lots of channels per fixture -- great for pixel strips and color-changing installs. If you just need to dim and control building lighting ballasts, that's what DALI is designed for, which serves a different purpose than DMX512.
