What Is DMX512?
DMX512 is a lighting control protocol born on theatre stages that's now showing up in home LED installations too. Here's a plain-language rundown of what it actually does and when it's worth bothering with.
How DMX512 Works
Universe and channels
One DMX512 line, called a 'universe', carries 512 channels. Each channel holds a value from 0-255 that controls one parameter -- brightness, a colour, a position.
Daisy-chain wiring
Fixtures connect one after another in a daisy-chain, not a star. The last device on the line needs a 120-ohm terminator to stop signal reflections.
The physical layer
Data travels over RS-485 cable at 250 kbit/s. A single segment supports up to 32 'unit loads' (a standardised receiver load, not literally 32 fixtures) before you need a splitter.
A controller drives it all
A controller sends fresh channel values dozens of times per second, which is what lets you run smooth colour fades and scenes instead of just on/off switching.

Connector: 5-pin XLR by spec
ANSI E1.11 calls for a 5-pin XLR connector. In practice, 3-pin XLR shows up constantly on entertainment lighting gear -- it's not spec-compliant, but it's what you'll often actually find.
RDM adds two-way control
RDM (ANSI E1.20) rides the same line and lets a controller discover and address fixtures automatically, instead of setting DIP switches by hand on each one. It's backward-compatible with plain DMX512 receivers.
Art-Net carries it over Ethernet
Art-Net sends DMX universes over a network instead of a direct RS-485 run. It's widely adopted in the industry, but it's not an official ANSI or ESTA standard.
sACN is the official IP standard
sACN (ANSI E1.31) also carries DMX-style data over IP, but it is an official standard and supports multicast, so several devices can receive the same stream at once.

Frequently asked questions
Is DMX512 the same as DALI?
No. DALI is built for standard control of building-lighting ballasts and drivers -- dimming and switching. DMX512 is aimed at dynamic, scene-based lighting with many channels per fixture, and it comes from the stage-lighting world. They solve different problems.
Do I actually need DMX512 at home?
If you're running a large LED pixel strip or an installation with many individually colour-controlled segments and you want real scene effects, DMX512 makes sense. For switching or dimming a normal room light, it's usually overkill -- a simpler option will do.
What's the difference between Art-Net and sACN?
Both carry DMX data over an Ethernet/IP network instead of a direct RS-485 line. Art-Net is widely adopted in the industry but isn't an official ANSI/ESTA standard. sACN (ANSI E1.31) is the official standard and supports multicast.
