What Is the Larnitech CAN Bus?

This isn't the story of the whole Larnitech ecosystem - just the bus itself. Here's what those two wires actually do, and why a wired system is often the smarter call for a bigger project.

Two wires, one conversation

CAN High and CAN Low form a twisted pair that carries data between every module on the bus.

WAGO connectors

Each DIN-rail module joins the bus through a standard WAGO-type terminal connector - no soldering needed.

A gateway at both ends

The Main Gateway module has 2 CAN bus connections, sitting at the two physical ends of the bus - a linear topology with termination at both ends.

Every module shares the same bus

Relays, dimmers, inputs and other modules all talk over the same two-wire bus, instead of a separate wire for every function.

The bus doesn't run on batteries that need swapping or charging - data travels over the wire as long as the system is powered.

The CAN High/Low differential signal resists electromagnetic interference - the same physical-layer principle industry and cars have relied on for decades.

A clear, proven topology

A linear bus with termination at both ends (via the Main Gateway) - not a star or ring, as is typical for CAN networks.

A wired system isn't an app download - the bus has to be planned and run before or alongside renovation.

What is a CAN bus in simple terms?

Why choose a wired system over wireless?

A wired bus doesn't depend on batteries or Wi-Fi signal strength, which makes it more reliable in bigger projects where wireless links can start to struggle.

Is the Larnitech CAN bus the same as KNX?

No. Larnitech is its own, manufacturer-proprietary CAN bus system, configured through its own app - it isn't the open KNX standard and isn't KNX-certified.

Is it CANopen?

No. Larnitech uses the CAN physical layer with its own manufacturer protocol - it isn't the open CANopen higher-layer protocol.

What does this mean for my renovation?

The bus cable needs to be run before or alongside your renovation - it's not just an app download, so plan the wiring early.
