The standard behind the name

Objects and properties
Every point on a BACnet network is an 'object' (AI, AO, AV, BI, BO, BV, Device, and more), each with properties like Present_Value and Status_Flags — a bit like a mini data card per device.
Devices find each other automatically
Every BACnet device has a unique Device Instance number (0–4194302), and Who-Is/I-Am broadcasts let devices discover each other on the network without manual address entry.
Two ways to travel: IP and MS/TP
BACnet/IP runs over UDP (port 47808), while MS/TP uses RS-485 twisted-pair wiring with token-passing between devices — same job, very different scale.
Priority Array avoids conflicts
Controllable points get 16 priority levels — from a life-safety override down to a default value — so multiple systems can 'vote' on one switch without clashing.
BACnet/SC bolted security on later
BACnet Secure Connect, finalized in 2020, adds TLS 1.3 encryption and certificate-based authentication — a direct answer to older BACnet networks' lack of encryption.
